A Japanese garden plant (Niwaki) of Pinus pentaphylla (five-needle pine), an evergreen conifer, highly prized for its elegant form and hardiness. Its needles grow in clusters of five and are bluish-green in colour. In spring, the new shoots appear in a bright light green, whilst in the colder seasons the foliage takes on cooler, silvery hues. In spring, it develops small, yellowish male cones and female cones which, over time, develop into small ornamental pine cones. As it ages, the bark of this species cracks, becoming increasingly striking. Styled in the informal upright (Moyogi) style, it features a vigorous, sinuous trunk with natural movement, which winds upwards supporting dense, compact clusters of needles arranged asymmetrically to form a harmonious silhouette. Grown in an unglazed stoneware round pot.
