A Japanese garden plant (Niwaki) of Pinus pentaphylla (five-needle pine), an evergreen conifer, highly prized for its elegant form and hardiness. Its needles grow in clusters of five and are bluish-green in colour. In spring, the new shoots are a bright light green, whilst in the colder seasons the foliage takes on cooler, silvery hues. In spring, it develops small, yellowish male cones and female cones which, over time, develop into small ornamental pine cones. As it ages, the bark of this species cracks, becoming increasingly interesting. A well-structured and striking bonsai, shaped in the informal upright style (Moyogi), it features a vigorous trunk with natural movement, which winds upwards supporting branches of dense, compact needles arranged asymmetrically to form a harmonious silhouette. Grown in an unglazed stoneware round pot.
